Soot Free Candles
Paraffin versus Soy Candles
Soot free candle means there is no petrol-carbon soot that comes from petroleum based fuels that are found in paraffin candles.
Yes, soot free candles! Once you learn about these wonderful alternatives to toxic paraffin candles, you might throw away every soot-producing candle you own.
As a paraffin wax candle is burned, it produces soot that is the result of incomplete combustion of fuels containing carbon.
Did you know that paraffin wax is refined gasoline? Soot, by definition is called lampblack or carbon black and is the dark powdery deposit of unburned fuel residues. This is the black residue you see on candle jars. If the petroleum is not fully combusted, it produces petrol. Petrol or carbon soot is chemically similar to the exhaust smoke seen when a diesel truck accelerates on the highway.

No candle is 100% combustible, however soy natural candles do not put your health at risk. So while there is no candle that is absolutely soot free, candles that are made from soy or other vegetable based products other than paraffin are absolutely free from petrol-carbon soot!
Not only are soot free candles environmentally safer, they are water soluble and removed easily from surfaces, they burn cooler, longer and safer, clear burning, last three times longer than petroleum based candles, and are 100% non-toxic. When purchasing soy candles look for 100% soy (some companies add paraffin to their soy wax) and 100% cotton wicks.
Here is what the Environmental Protection Agency says about paraffin candles: “It's a fact that paraffin candles release far more soot (black smoke) into the air when burning. This soot contains 11 known toxins of which 2 are carcinogenic (toulene and benzene).” Also according to an EPA report, paraffin candles give off petrol-carbon soot, which can blacken walls, ceilings and furniture, and contaminate ventilation ductwork in your home, as well as adding potential carcinogens into the air you breathe. In a candle soot damage lawsuit, testing of the candles revealed toxins, not only the highly carcinogenic toluene and benzene, and vinyl chloride, but lead in the candlewick as well. Other air contaminants in paraffin fumes include methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and naphthalene--substances found in paint, lacquer and varnish removers. Tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage have been reported due to this petrol-carbon soot. Be especially cautious of imported candles.
